Abstract

Covering cultures are used with the purpose to be incorporated to the ground, with intention to improve physical, chemical and biological characteristics of cultivated ground. An experiment was lead in a Nitossolo, using an experimental delineation with randomized blocks with two types of vegetal covering cultures (feijão-guandu and nabo forrageiro) and three systems of handling (crusher of straws, harvest and herbicide) with four repetitions. Dry substance of the aerial part to the 30, 60 and 90 days after the sowing was evaluated, where the nabo forrageiro got greater dry mass in all evaluations. After handling, maize sowing was carried out and initial and final populations of plants were measured, as well as average diameter of maize, height of plants and height of insertion of the first spike. It was observed statistical differences only between covering cultures and handling did not influence final results. Productivity of grains did not suffer influence from none of the treatments, with averages of 5.197 and 5.778 kg.ha-1 for feijão-guandu and nabo forrageiro, respectively.
